Teddy Swims’ Journey: From Football to Chart-Topping Music Star and Future Father
Teddy Swims landed at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart with “I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 2)” right as the Recording Academy picked him as a Best New Artist nominee.
Swims shared on Instagram that he and partner Raiche Wright are expecting their first baby. The news comes during a career peak for the Atlanta artist, whose latest release grabbed the No. 5 spot on the Billboard 200.
He first caught people’s attention with viral YouTube covers. When he posted “You’re Still the One” in 2020, it quickly spread worldwide.
Things weren’t always easy. Swims’ family wasn’t happy with him when he quit football, but his mom came around after watching him perform. He hopes to coach kids’ sports once he becomes a dad.
“I wanted to quit football to do music, focus on theater. I remember my mom was so bummed out about it,” he said, as reported by Billboard.
His music shows off his many influences. Growing up, he listened to Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Otis Redding. These days, John Mayer, Chris Stapleton, and Bruno Mars help shape his music.
Music is in his DNA, from his dad playing guitar to his mom filling the house with Motown hits and rock classics. Atlanta’s music scene, with its blend of hip-hop and soul, also shaped his style.
Instead of chasing labels, Swims built his following online. His genuine approach connects with fans everywhere through YouTube and Instagram. There’s even a story behind his name: Childhood friends dubbed him “Teddy,” while “Swims” means “Someone Who Isn’t Me Sometimes.”
Catch him on the Feb. 11, 2025, episode of Mythical Kitchen’s Last Meals, where he chats about life and his favorite foods.
