This Week’s Backstage Country Host: Jordan Davis
Repping the great state of Louisiana, Backstage Country‘s co-host this week is none other than Jordan Davis! Davis will join Elaina Smith from February 24-28, playing country music, and sharing the stories behind some of his songs, including his biggest and latest hits.
“I Ain’t Sayin’”
Smith asked Davis about his current single, “I Ain’t Sayin.’” He shared that the song is the first one that he hasn’t been a writer. “Moving to Nashville, this was my goal, to be a songwriter and get songs on the radio. And I’m proud of it. I’m proud that I have a song that I’m not a writer on.”
He added, “I love this song so much, whether I was a part of it or not. But the thing that stood out to me was it was written on a writer’s retreat for me. We were writing for this next record. I was so impressed by the research they did on coming into this camp and writing for me that they wrote a song that it feels like I wrote.”
Smith asked if Davis was in the retreat with the writers. He said, “Oh, no, I was in the cabin next to them when they wrote this song.” Smith pointed out that he’s still kind of part of the writing it since his vibes were there.
“Singles You Up”
Jordan Davis told Smith the story of when they wrote the song. “It was me, Steven Dale Jones and Justin Ebach. Justin just got engaged to a girl that everybody loves in Nashville. Everybody knows her. We were talking about how lucky he was. He told me that somebody told him he was smart not to single her up.” He chuckled, “Immediately, me and Steven Dale were like, ‘Dude, that’s really cool.’ Like, we need to write that.”
He added, “I finished the song, I’m driving home. This was my biggest memory out of ‘Singles You Up.’ I was driving home, I called Kristen [O’Connor]. We were dating at the time. And I was like, ‘I just finished the song. I think it’s pretty cool.’ And I remember telling her, ‘I think it’s either going to be cool or dumb. I’ve probably told you this story before.’ She was like, ‘What’s the name of it?’ I said, ‘Singles You Up.’ She said, ‘Oh, I think that’s going to be dumb.’
Since the song went big, Davis said Kristen admitted she was wrong. “Yeah, she’ll tell you. She’d say, ‘Yeah, I was wrong.’ But it’s so wild to even come across that song now on the set where we’ve been doing this for a little bit now. There’s a lot more songs that we have. But it’s still special to play that one. It feels like it’s 10,000 miles from who I am now. But the second I start singing it. I’m so grateful for that song, that was the one that allowed me to start getting to talk on the radio.”
