Long Bright River by Liz Moore
When I heard that Amanda Seyfried was in Philadelphia filming the new series Long Bright River, I immediately downloaded the book to my kindle. The author, Liz Moore is an English professor at Temple University. While the book is not about anyone specific in the author's life, Moore did write this book based on her own observations of an area of Philadelphia that has been hit hard by the opioid crisis.
Long Bright River by Liz Moore presents a real and raw snapshot of life in the Kensington section of Philadelphia; a neighborhood known for its high rates of drug use, poverty and homelessness. There are many depictions of Kensington as looking like a zombie-town with drug users meandering around, passing out in the street and sidewalks. All you have to do is search Kensington on YouTube to see the devastating truth of what is happening, not just in Philly, but across the nation. That’s what makes this book so poignant.

The story follows the character Mickey, a Philly cop with a dark secret. Mickey and her sister Kacey had a rough childhood. Mickey took her life in one direction and Kacey went the other way. So, everytime Mickey hears of a young woman the victim of murder or overdose in Kensington, she is worried that it is her sister. Mickey is on a mission to find her sister and solve the mystery of who is killing these girls.

(L-R) John Doman, Ashleigh Cummings, Liz Moore, Cameron Crovetti, Amanda Seyfried, Nikki Toscano and Nicholas Pinnock attend the Peacock's "Long Bright River" New York Premiere
The story is filled with sadness and frustration, hope and despair, twists and turns, and surprises. Long Bright River is not an easy read, but I do believe it is a necessary one. Moore has written a tragically real story about a life and lifestyle many of us conveniently ignore. The series Long Bright River is showing right now on Peacock.
