My Soapbox
- I am an advocate of mental health. I think it is a serious subject that should be spoken about more often than it is.
- I think everyone should have a therapist.
- I think we should each check in on our loved ones more often to make sure they are doing okay.
- I think that ignoring problems makes them bigger.
- I think, when someone is acting out of character, we shouldn’t pass it off as a “phase” or “mood.” We should ask what’s going on and help work it out.
- I think we need to stop ignoring the elephant in the room and start acknowledging it.
- I think we need to love more.
- I think we need to show our love more.
For all these reasons, I love The Wedding People.
‘The Wedding People’ by Alison Espach
In The Wedding People, Alison Espach does a wonderful job highlighting the humorous side to very real-life subjects that people seem to try to avoid, and even avoid talking about (outside of gossip). If you are looking to make some new friends who can teach you a thing or two about a thing or two, The Wedding People is worth your time.
We start by finding the main character Phoebe completely overdressed at an over-the-top inn in Rhode Island and mistaken for a guest at a wedding that is being held at the inn that week/weekend. What brought her there? Why is she dressed like that?
The wedding is lavish, unlike anything Phoebe has seen before. The bride is meticulous in her plans and adamant the week carries on as slated. She is the ultimate bridezilla. But Phoebe’s unexpected appearance does more than throw a wrench in the bride’s plan for a perfect wedding.
These two women, Phoebe and the bride, could not be more dissimilar. They are in very different stages of life. They come from very different backgrounds. They have a very different approach to life. Perhaps that is what makes their happenstance a God-Wink. You know, those moments that make you take a step back and realize there are no coincidences.
The Wedding People is a book about raw emotions, the break-down and establishment of relationships, the things we unwittingly teach each other. But the best part is that all these lessons are done in a curiously fun way. You can’t help but laugh out loud at the ridiculousness of the bride, as well as Phoebe’s bad luck in life.
The interactions and relationships in this book are so incredibly enjoyable and relatable that I was sad when it was over and I had to leave my new friends.
